Google has added a small business filter to Search on desktop and mobile and to Maps on mobile for users in the US.

In a blog post on 20th November, Google said the filter would make it easier for people to find and support small businesses “this weekend and beyond”, so it comes right on time for the start of the busiest shopping period of the year.

Here’s what the new filter looks like.

If you tap on the small business button, you'll see products from merchants that classify themselves as small businesses. This includes ecommerce and local businesses, as well as sellers from platforms such as Etsy and eBay.

Earlier this month, Google rolled out its new small business attribute, which you can add via your Google Business Profile or Merchant Center. Products sold by businesses with the attribute will have a small business label on them in Search and Maps, and shoppers will now also be able to filter on this.

With a Google survey showing that 84% of people considered supporting small and local businesses was important to them, if you’re a small business it’s worth adding the attribute to see if you can catch some of that goodwill.
