Using Alexa Rank to measure your site's performance

Posted by on 15 August 2007

Alexa Rank ranks your site's popularity in visitor numbers as measured by those who have used Alexa’s toolbar. It's also great for spying on competitors' sites.

The most visited site on the internet (currently Google, according to Alexa) has an Alexa Rank of one. If your site’s Alexa rank is higher than 100,000, then treat it with caution.

Also note that the Alexa toolbar is used (and seriously gamed) by lots of online marketing professionals, so Alexa ranks for the sites they visit are skewed to give a higher ranking than they should have.

See your and other sites' Alexa Ranks by downloading the Alexa Toolbar and visiting the sites you want to study. The image below helps show and explain what you'll see if you use the Alexa Toolbar with Firefox.
