New training video on finding long tail keywords

One of the first things web marketers and business website owners need to think about for new websites are the keywords they should be using to attract visitors. Mal Darwen explains how to find the long tail and related keywords that great content can then be created around.

Read the transcript:

Hi there, welcome back.

In this video I'll show you how to filter and save keywords from a list, and also how to find keywords you'd never think of even in hours of brainstorming - and how to find the real detail in the long tail of search.

First, Filtering:

Now we've got our 2,000 keywords, it's easy to filter out keywords that we don't want to use - perhaps the best example is getting rid of 'free' or 'cheap' keywords.

It's best to start with all the keywords deselected. Just type a word you want to exclude into the 'select keywords' box, and hit 'select'. We'll tell you how many we've selected in the list, and you can just hit 'delete' and you'll never see those searches from people who want to see free stuff. They'll just be gone.

Or, maybe you want to see those searches - in which case, just hit the 'save selected' button, and you can choose where to put those keywords for reference later on. You can then hit 'delete' and you won't have any duplicates in your work.

You can, of course, select all of the keywords, and your entire list will be saved for you to come back to later on.

Now what I'd like to show you here is the Related Keywords tool. Just click to open the tool out, and enter a seed word relevant to your market in this box.

We'll find keywords that sites who rank for that keyword are already using - it's like getting your competitors to do your keyword research for you. It's a great brainstorming tool.

When you see a word that resonates for you, you can find out more about it in an instant - just hit the 'search' link next to the keyword and either click 'search' to run the search on the page, or 'search and save' to save the list to any project (you can make one just by typing in that field) in the background. You can also search and save from any keyword in the right hand list - the blue tool - which is an excellent way to find out other keywords in that specific niche - you're going right into the long tail of search here.

When you have a list in the blue tool, you can export to a .csv file really easily - either just the keywords in the list, or, you can export the keywords and all of the numbers too, so that you can share or manipulate the data at your leisure.

Exporting related keywords is just as easy - just hit the 'export' link at the top of the related list, and the keywords will be downloaded for you immediately.

Let us know if you have any questions or comments about the tool - we're easy to reach at support@wordtracker.com - we're always happy to hear from you.
