Target the long tail of search

Searches made with the most popular (‘head’) keywords are a small % of searches made with their ‘long tails’ (variations of the same keywords).

Target groups of keywords (keyword niches) not single keywords

This is the only way to work at the scale required for profit.

Prove your site can convert those who search with those keywords.

Then optimize for verified keywords.

You’ll need visits to do this but once you have visits: build on success.

If you’re targeting the long tail, there are always more searchers to target (even if you’re already number no 1 on Google. Especially then.)

Plan a site structure around your target keyword niches

Imagine your content filling those categories like water in a bucket.

Then switch metaphors and imagine your categories’ content as a big net (the more content, the bigger net) trawling the long tail to find searchers.

Make it quality content

I’m repeating this because it’s important. Make sure your content is interesting and searchers will want to read it, share it and link to it.

Link internally from your site’s home page (and other powerful pages) direct to your most important pages

Those most important pages are the ones you most want to do well on search engines. They can be planned for and they can emerge.

These pages might be deep in your site’s structure but they need all the link power your site can give. So link directly to them with the pages that already have the most links (that will include your home page).

Find prospects that might link to your site

Explore your target markets’ online community. Find targets for links and social sharing.

Organize your link prospects into different link building strategies

Eg, blogs, social media, news sites.

Network, make friends and influence people

Network your prospects, be polite and help others. Give before you ask for something in return.

Promote your quality content to your link prospects

Use a newsletter, email, Twitter, Facebook, advertising and the telephone. Ask for links to your content.

Offer guest content to your site’s network

You’ve proven you can create great content. Offer other sites content (that contains links back to your site).

Get links without asking

Once you are established in your market’s online community (earlier if you’re brilliant or lucky), if you create interesting or useful enough content then you’ll get links without asking.

Get text links containing your target keywords

These are the links that will bring you success.

Don’t only get target keyword-rich text links

Mix things up with related keywords and natural keywords like ‘click here’ and your site’s name and URL.

Target the head, exploit the tail

Focus link building efforts around exact match keywords but exploit the long tail (keywords containing those exact matches) with lots of related content.

Check your site is technically optimized for SEO

Technical SEO is like the mechanics that make your SEO ‘car’ safe at speed.

So regularly check your site is technically sound for SEO.

Creative quality content, promotion and link building is the driving that wins races

Spend most of your resources on content that will wow readers, make them come back to, trust, love, link to and share your site.

Monitor results, especially marginal response rates

Are your original target keyword niches still giving the highest response rates and levels? Should your target keyword niches be changed?

Use and trust an SEO process

There is much to do for SEO, so much to go wrong and it might take 6-12 months to get results. So you have to trust a process (a series of related steps) that will look after you.
