Video notes

The text of internal links on your site and inbound links to your site from other sites is crucial to search engine success.

  • If you want to get to the top of page one on Google it is important to learn how to leverage internal linking text over which you have complete control and external linking text which you can't control but you can influence.
  • Link text is the actual text clicked when following a link. E.g. This is link text in blue.
  • The keyword phrase 'home office furniture' is an example of internal linking text. You're not just providing a link but a clue to the actual content by including the keyword phrase as part of the link.
  • First, keyword rich text is more attractive and can really increase your conversion rates.
  • Secondly, it tips off Google and other search engines as to the linked page's content. Google likes this and can reward you with a higher rankings.
  • Internal linking text comes in two flavors: navigation menus and body text links used to link to other documents on your site (or other site's). A bad example of navigation linking text is 'bedroom' which is too broad and a good example is 'bedroom furniture'.
  • Don't use 'click here'. Make sure your anchor text is made out of the keywords for which you want to be ranked.
  • External linking text are inbound links that arrive at your site from other websites. You can make these links keyword rich by a) asking the website manager to use your link text and b) giving them the exact HTML for them to choose from. Get ten examples all ready and reduce any work they have to do.
  • If you're generous with keyword rich links back to other people's websites they will be more likely to return the favor.
  • Look for good directory links or buy text links from reputable sites that let you specify the linking text.
  • Learn to write an effective press release and a service like PRWeb to distribute them. For a small extra fee you can embed links directly into the body copy of the press release.
  • Write and publish quality articles and blog posts and include important keywords in the title. People will use those titles when they link back to you.
  • Use ezines, online newsletters and other information sources will often accept well written articles for publications generally including a signature box showing what you do and linking back to your site in whatever way you specify.
  • Make sure your inbound links are keyword rich and you will be rewarded with better rankings.
  • Vary the text used to link to the same page, use the page's primary keyword, secondary keywords and variations on them like plurals, singulars, synonyms and similar words.
