3. Keyword Researcher
The Keyword Researcher is the tool to use when:
- (i) You collected a good seed list of keywords and you want to check out which are the most popular
- (ii) You've found some good keywords that are converting well on PPC and you want to see how those exact keywords are used in longer search terms
- (iii) You've got some keywords and you want to see how they can be combined and ordered to give you more.
(i) "You collected a good seed list of keywords and you want to check which are the most popular"
Suppose you have a digital photography site. You've got a seed list of keywords and you want to find out which are the most popular. Here's your list:
- Digital camera
- Digital photography
- Digital slr
- Compare digital camera
- Digital camera comparison
- Digital camera ratings
- Camera buying tips
- Camera buying guide
- Digicam
Paste them into the research box, choose 'exact keyword only' and 'include plurals'. This will not expand your keyword list but tell you the popularity of each.
Here's what you'd enter:
And here are the results:
'Searches' is the number of times the keyword has appeared in our database over the last 90 days. 'Predict' is our prediction of the number of times the exact keyword will be searched for in a 24 hour period across all search engines.
Now you know which of your seed keywords are most popular and you can concentrate your optimization efforts accordingly.
(iii) "You've found some good keywords that are converting well on PPC and you want to see how those exact keywords are used in longer search terms."
Suppose, you're a bank that wants to target the small business sector through its website.
You start with the phrase 'small business' and want to see how that is used in real searches. Here the first search you would do:

In fact, Wordtracker has found 1,000 keywords.
(iii) "You've got some keywords and you want to see how they can be combined and ordered to give you more"
This search will show results that include 'outdoor sport' AND 'sport outdoor' AND 'sport kit outdoor'..

In this case, Wordtracker has found 143 keywords.
Evaluating your keywords
Now let's move on to the next step and look at how to evaluate the keyword you've found.
Click on evaluate, and you'll be asked to choose which search engine or directory you'd like to check the competition on.
Once you've chosen, hit evaluate.
Here are the results:
- 'Google' is the number of results that appear when you search for the exact search term. You can click on the blue number to go direct to the search engine.
- 'Google KEI' is the keyword effectiveness index for Google only.
- 'Google 24 hr Predict' is our estimate of the number of times the exact keyword will be searched for on Google.
