Wordtracker Tour

2. Keyword Universe

The Keyword Universe is the tool to use when:

  • You're just starting out and you want to generate a list of relevant keywords
  • You want to explore your market, find out what keywords other websites are using and expand your content
  • You've reached a plateau with your PPC campaigns and you want to find more groups of keywords that you could develop

There are 4 steps:

Step 1: Find related terms

Start by entering a relevant keyword in the search box: for example, if you have an online candy store, you might start by entering 'chocolate'.

Find related terms

Wordtracker will search other websites that score well on the search engines and show you the keywords they use.

Here's the results:

Term results

So other sites that score well on search engines for 'chocolate', also use keywords such as 'gourmet chocolate', 'chocolate gifts' and 'chocolate truffles'.

You'll also find keywords such as 'cocoa', 'fudge' and 'candy' that you might decide are also relevant to your site.

The Keyword Universe expands your keyword lists by finding keywords that you might not have thought of originally.

Step 2: Dig deep to see how a keyword is used in longer search terms

Your target keywords will appear in longer search terms (e.g. 'chocolate gifts' also appears in 'corporate chocolate gifts'). These longer terms may well be easier to rank well for and can give you great ideas for content.

Click on any keyword in your list and see how it is used in longer keywords. Let's click on chocolate in position1 - and the longer keywords will appear on the right.

Longer keywords

Here's what the headings mean:

  • Count - the number of times the keyword appears in our database of searches by real people.
  • 24 hours - our prediction of the number of times the exact keyword will be searched for across all search engines in a 24 hour period.

(Dig allows you to dig even deeper into search terms).

Now you can click on any individual keyword in the list to add it to your basket or simply hit 'Click here to add all keywords to your basket'.

Once you've added the 300 keywords to your basket you can go back to the left hand column and click on another related keyword and repeat the process.

Repeat the process as many times as you like

You can continue this process as many times as you like, adding hundreds of keywords to your basket each time.

Step 3: Export or email your keywords

Click on Step 3 and your chosen keywords appear on your screen. The keywords are organized in descending order with the most popular first.

Export

You can export these keywords or email them to yourself or a client.

But most people move on to the next stage and check out the competition each of these keywords will face on the search engines.

Step 4: Estimate how much competition your keywords will face

Some of your keywords will be easier to rank well for than others. That depends on your competition and Wordtracker can tell you how much competition each keyword will face.

Wordtracker can tell you how much competition each keyword will face

Choose an engine on which you want to do the competition search and hit 'Proceed'.

The following results appear:

Best search terms for particular search engines

You can see that the keywords are now organized in descending order of KEI which stands for Keyword Effectiveness Index.

This is a mathematical formula calculated from two pieces of data - 'Count', the number of times the keyword appears in our database and 'Competing' which is the number of pages that show up when we search on your chosen search engine for the exact keyword.

(click on the keyword and you'll be taken direct to these results on the search engine.)

  • KEI (keyword effectiveness index) - a calculation based on the popularity of the keyword and the number of competing pages in Google results. The higher the KEI, the more attractive the keyword may be.
  • Count - the number of times the keyword appears in our database of searches by real people.
  • 24 hours - our prediction of the number of times the exact keyword will be searched for on Google in a 24 hour period.
  • Competing - the number of pages returned in the results when a search for the exact keyword phrase is conducted on Google.
