Strategizer: an SEO’s first look

Posted by Wordtracker on 21 January 2011

Hello there, I’m Max Holloway, this is my first week here at Wordtracker and already I’ve discovered a lot of interesting features about our tools.

I decided that my first blog post should be about my initial impression of Strategizer.

I’ve worked in SEO and online marketing for just over four years now, with sites ranging from enterprise project management through jazz bands to legal sites. And, above all else, I could see that Strategizer is going to be a huge time-saver.

In my spare time I like to play jazz saxophone and do the odd gig here and there for people looking for jazz bands. My site is quite small so makes for the perfect example of a small business website.

It took me about five minutes to set up Strategizer with my Google Analytics accounts, a surprisingly simple and pain-free process. Once set-up it took a wee while to pull the data over from Analytics, then I was ready to go!

Key benefits

The main benefit of Strategizer is that it automatically organizes my keywords into groups. This saves an unimaginable number of hours from my mornings! Even a small website could have hundreds of long tail keywords that can easily fall under one main head term.

These head terms make it easy to:

  • Track conversions for singular products
  • Come up with new keyword ideas

For example, I pointed Strategizer at my jazz website and came up with this:

It’s worth noting that importing Google Analytics data is incredibly easy.

The head term London Jazz includes long tail queries that contain the words London and Jazz.

So within five minutes I know that people are looking for literature about the London Jazz Festival, looking to hire a jazz pianist in London and inquiring about the Green Note (lesser known jazz venue in Parkway).

All of these are things I could create more content for and thus drive more traffic to my website! Even though my website has quite low traffic (100-500 visits per month) I can still get useful results from Strategizer.

Taking this into account I have decided to create content for and target the keyphrase Hire Jazz Pianist London

I’ve worked with sites that could have 2,000+ keywords, all from people searching for the same product. So if I wanted to track the performance of a new PPC campaign, or a price reduction as a whole for that product I would have to go into Google Analytics, export the figures from a few reports, merge spreadsheets and average out numbers by hand. This could take four hours. Fortunately, Strategizer can do this in minutes.

I will be blogging about Strategizer and Wordtracker's other tools over the next few months to highlight key features and interesting tips. In the meantime, why not sign up for a free trial and test it yourself?
