This week sees the release of our SERPs ranking tool. If you're a Keywords tool subscriber you can now track up to 100 keywords in the SERPs (Search Engine Ranking Pages) in Google. Wordtracker's Mal Darwen explains all about it.

Track your keywords

But why would you want to track your keywords?

Well, for those people fortunate enough to rank well for our favorite keywords, it's satisfying to see that they're on page one of the results - but that's just a bit of vanity which doesn't really help if those keywords don't have any real search volume, or those keywords just don't convert for you. There's a much more important reason than that warm feeling inside ...

Being able to see where you (and up to three of your competitors) rank for certain keywords can give a fantastic insight into how your marketing is doing in relation to those working in the same market, and can help spur your actions by presenting some interesting questions:

  • Why are my competitors ranking higher than me for this keyword?
  • Why have my rankings gone down?
  • What effect did last month's work have on my rankings?

There are a number of factors involved in the ranking algorithm, including the age of your domain, the relevance and quality of your content, the number of links to the page you're tracking and several more.

These are all factors you can look at to compare yourself to your competitor and find out what they may be doing better than you: so you can take inspiration from them.

Perhaps they've found a great way to use video on their page (Google loves rich content), or maybe they've optimized their images or their title and header tags more clearly and effectively than you. Are they getting more links to their page than you?

There are a few simple things that you can take action on to help a search engine recognize your pages' relevancy:

  • Tidying up your internal linking to show search engines exactly what each page is about.
  • Making sure all of your images have meaningful titles and alt text: to show search engines exactly what each image is about.
  • Enriching your link building, perhaps even by targeting sites that link to your competitors. Link Builder is a fantastic tool for showing you who is linking to your competitors as well as to you.
