Illustration for Content ideas: What's hot?

Nick Usborne recommends you use software to find out what subjects are hot, what's new and what gets shared most on social media. Then create a new page, focusing on a trending topic that is spreading fast.

48ers.com helps you identify what’s hot, right now.

The thing about this site is that it doesn’t just track what’s new on one social media site, but across several.

It tracks Twitter, Facebook, Google Buzz, Digg and Delicious

For example, you could type #contentmarketing into the search box and see all the latest entries on that topic, from all five sources.

What’s the point?

Well, what I do is track various words and phrases, each of them relevant to a site I am working on.

By seeing the topics that are rising to the top each day I get a great insight into what people are thinking and writing about.

In addition I discover which topics and headline types are spreading the fastest across the major social media sites.

In other words, I’m learning two important things:

  1. What’s new and popular.
  2. What spreads the most.

My next step is to then create a new page, focusing on a trending topic that is spreading fast.

It may not be one of the highest value pages on my site – but it does get my site in front of a whole new group of readers, some of whom will explore the site further and come back in the future.
