The calendar is packed full of special days from Martin Luther King Day to, er, Talk Like A Pirate Day and Superman's birthday. Nick Usborne shows you how to use special days to make special content your readers will like and share.

The calendar is packed full of special days.

And not just Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Thanksgiving and the other usual suspects.

Here is just a sprinkling of other official special days:

  • Martin Luther King Jr Day
  • Chinese/Lunar New Year
  • President's Day
  • Ash Wednesday
  • Spring Equinox
  • Labor Day
  • Columbus Day
  • Veteran's Day
  • Hanukkah
  • Winter solstice

Then you can move on to the slightly less well known days, like:

  • World Braille Day
  • Family Literacy Day
  • International Childhood Cancer Day
  • Self-Injury Awareness Day
  • World Water Day
  • World Theatre Day
  • World Autism Day
  • Earth Day
  • World Asthma Day
  • International Day of Families
  • World Blood Donor Day

Then there are the unofficial oddball days, like:

  • Donut Day
  • Oscar the Grouch's Birthday
  • National Fudge Day
  • Meteor Day
  • Superman's Birthday
  • National Apricot Day

And these are just a small fraction of the special days of the year.

And don’t forget the special weeks, or the special months.

What is the point? Well, look for official or semi-official days, weeks or months of the year that relate in some way to the topic of your website.

Then create some special content around that day, week or month.

Do something different. Have a contest. Write a series of special articles. Invite people who celebrate that day to email in their photos or video clips.

Work hard to become a hub around which people can celebrate that day. Write a press release. Get in touch with organizers of that day. Collect donations if there is a charitable cause involved.

The days I have listed above are just the tip of the iceberg. Go to Google and do a search for special days of the year.

This is a great way to give your site a boost. Create some good content around a special day and then go nuts with social media. Make it something to share.

Oh, and if you can’t find a special day related to your website topic, create one!
